Den korthåriga collien är idag klassificerad som brukshundsras i Sverige, en definition och grupptillhörighet som bygger på rasens historiska bakgrund och på de traditionella användningsområdena för brukshunden. Under de senaste åren har rasens popularitet ökat, både i Sverige och utomlands. Många hundar har vunnit stort i utställningssammanhang, andra tävlats med inom lydnad och bruks, och ett flertal hundar i Norden och i övriga Europa har utbildats även inom andra områden som passar korthåren i dagens moderna samhälle som t.ex. terapihundar, assistanshundar, epilepsihundar, alzheimerhundar, servicehundar, diabeteshundar, räddningshundar av olika slag m.m.

Avsikten med denna mindre undersökning var att få reda på hur ägarna till korthåriga collies ansåg att rasen främst kunde definieras idag, 2011, samt att se om definitionen av korthårscollien var annorlunda i Sverige/Skandinavien jämfört med Storbritannien och övriga Europa/andra länder. Jag ville genom frågeställningarna också få svar på om ägarna tyckte att begreppet brukshund/workingdog var ett korrekt beskrivande begrepp för rasen 2011 eller om en annan term var mer passande.

Frågan ställdes på två forum på Facebook, det ena svenskt - med medlemmar i huvudsak från de nordiska länderna - och på Smooth Collie Club of Great Britains forumsida, där medlemmar från hela världen finns representerade, om än i huvudsak från Storbritannien. Detta pågick under tio dagar, 30/9 - 9/10 2011. På båda forumen uppmanades korthårsägare att svara på hur de tyckte att den korthåriga collien ö v e r v ä g a n d e skulle definieras som idag och välja en kategori av de föreslagna beskrivningarna. Avsiktligt angavs tre kategorier, men med möjlighet att lägga till kategorier om man så önskade.

Sammanlagt har 102 personer svarat på kategorierna. Till detta har dock ett flertal hundägare istället valt att kommentera sina synpunkter om rasen, men på så vis inte kommit med i kategoriresultaten. Några har också lagt sin röst både i det svenska och i det internationella forumet. Några har också valt att välja alla kategorier. Sju har valt att skicka personliga meddelanden till mig på Facebook från det svenska forumet och 11 från det brittiska forumet.

På det svenska/nordiska forumet "Vi som gillar hundrasen korthårig collie" uppmanades hundägarna att svara på följande fråga:

Jag vill veta hur olika korthårsägare i olika länder definierar rasen idag - 2011. Hur ser du på den korthåriga collien - Är den övervägande en...?

Tre av nedanstående kategorival kunde göras. Avsikten var att hundägaren skulle välja en kategori som den tyckte passade bäst, men några valde flera kategorier, även allround-hund. Den sistnämnda kategori var också ett tillagt val av en gruppmedlem.

På det svenska/nordiska forumet var man tämligen överens om att korthårscollien var en hundras som kunde passa till det mesta, allt från de traditionella bruksspecialerna till många av de uppdrag/arbeten som finns för hunden i det moderna samhället. Kommentarer i poster eller meddelanden som att den är flexibel och aktiv, att "den gör i stort sett det man erbjuder den" - har jag tolkat som att hundägarna uppfattar sina hundar som aktiva, samarbetsvilliga och formbara till många olika typer uppgifter.

Allround-hunden är den avlägset vinnande kategorin - om än viss godtycklighet finns i valet av denna svarskategori, då innebörden av termen allroundhund ger rasen en så vid beskrivningsbild att det kan motsvara i princip allt vad en hund kan tänkas användas till. Jag har tolkat detta som att hundägarna menar att korthårscollien kan användas till många olika uppdrag och aktiviteter. Den är uppenbarligen en mycket mångfacetterad hundras!

Brukshund Tretton personer valde denna kategori och ansåg att rasen var övervägande en brukshund. Antalet tävlande korthårscollies på lydnads- och brukstävlingarna har också ökat i takt med att rasen blivit numerärt större. Många förare uppskattar rasens arbetsegenskaper och enligt kommentarerna så borde fler korthår få kunna visa vad de kan prestera även inom dessa områden.

Kategorin Brukshund ger dock uppenbarligen inte längre en stringent och rättvist beskrivande bild av korthåren idag. Jag har tolkat detta som att hundägarna i första hand tänker på de traditionella bruksgrenarna som spår, rapport och sök etc. och inte direkt på en arbetande hund, oavsett de många olika uppdrag en hund kan ha i dagens samhälle. Detta om än de flesta är tämligen överens om att det är en aktiv ras som kan användas till många olika uppdrag i det moderna samhället. 

Ingen ansåg att den korthåriga collien var uteslutande en utställningsras eller en ren sällskapshund. Flera har dock påpekat att den också är en vacker utställningshund och en utmärkt sällskapshund!

På det engelsktalande forumet SCCGB valde ingen att definiera korthårscollie som enbart utställningshund, tretton personer svarande working dog men intressant nog var dessa huvudsakligen nordiska hundägare, men också några europeiska hundägare. Till skillnad från skandinaviska hundägare var det 25 personer som ansåg att rasen idag främst var en sällskapshund. Några kommenterade också att den kunde användas till annat och att det var en bonus om det fick göra det.

En medlem på forumet lade till kategorin multi purpose dog som liksom allroundhund har ett mycket brett, om än ännu vidare spektrum. Behovet av att skapa en ytterligare kategori var påtagligt och de flesta som senare röstade valde just denna kategori (25).

Även på detta forum har många känt ett behov av att uttryckligen beskriva alla de olika områden som den korthåriga collien kan användas till idag och varför det är så. Man har dock även här undvikit begreppet "working dog" vilket jag tolkar som att även i rasens ursprungsland och i andra engelsktalande länder, anser man att denna term inte helt beskriver rasen på ett tydligt sätt idag eller att det har en föråldrad betydelse.

Någon svarade t.ex. att väldigt få avlar för vallhundsarbete idag. Det kan också vara så att uppfattningen av vår innebörd av termen brukshund inte alls beskriver de klassiska bruksgrenarna för många ägare utanför Norden. Viss godtycklighet finns också här, då kommentarerna ibland är av mer generella drag och beskriver en sund, vacker och frisk hundras än med fokus på specifika användningsområden.

Resultaten från detta forum tyder också på att den korthåriga collien idag anses som en hund som kan passa för många olika uppdrag i samhället, men att termen brukshund/working dog inte är ger en helt korrekt beskrivning av hundrasen!

Här listas också uppdrag som korthåriga collies utför, från hundägare i många olika länder som t.ex. räddningshundar, terapihundar av olika slag PAT hundar, assistans och sökhundar. blindledarhundar, signalhund, epilepsi-, alzheimer- och diabeteshundar samt vallhundar m.m. Till detta finns många kommentarer om rasens många framgångar inom lydnad och agility.

Många vill också på detta forum beskriva rasen genom kommentarer och menar att den korthåriga collien är t.ex. - aktiv, lyhörd, att dess egenskaper gör att den passar för många sociala uppdrag, att den är självständig men samtidigt lätt kan uppfatta kommandon och samarbeta.

Sammanfattningsvis så tyder allt på att de flesta ägarna till korthåriga collies anser att det är en ras som kan passa till många olika typer av aktiviteter, uppdrag och arbeten i det moderna samhället. En multipel nyttoras eller en "allround - hund". De flesta påpekar att rasens flexibilitet är kopplat till att den är aktiv, dess egenskaper gör att den är formbar, användbar och har kapacitet att utföra olika uppgifter om den ges sådana möjligheter. Om den ges möjlighet att få utföra någon slags aktivitet så gör den gärna detta. Ett flertal uppfödare har också kommenterat att det är en frisk och sund hundras med mental kapacitet och att detta är de mål de också strävar efter.

Trots att rasen blivit en så framgångsrik utställningshund så har ingen beskrivit rasen som att övervägande definieras som detta. Om anledningen till detta är att de som helst har sina hundar som utställningshundar inte valt att delta i undersökningen eller om det finns ett pejorativt inslag i själva begreppen utställningshund/show dog är svårt att avgöra inom ramen för denna undersökning.

Som jag tolkar det, så menar hundägarna att det saknas idag en lämplig term för att beskriva den korthåriga collien. Till övervägande del beskriver inte termen brukshund hundrasen idag, vare sig i Sverige, Norden, i rasens hemland eller i andra länder där den korthåriga collien föds upp och ägs av vanliga hundägare. Begreppen brukshund och working dog är inte klart definierade och innebörden är inte densamma för oss i Skandinavien som för många utanför Norden.

Uppenbart är att den korthåriga collien beskrivs som en multipel nyttoras eller en hund som passar för en mängd olika aktiviteter och uppdrag i samhället. Utifrån denna gemensamma uppfattning vore det bra för rasen om det kunde skapas en gemensam term som beskrev vad de flesta nu uttryckt!  Detta oavsett om vi bor i Norden, i Storbritannien, i Europa eller andra länder. En definition som alla är överens om vad den innebär - att den korthåriga collien är en mångfasetterad hundras som är användbar inom många olika områden där hundar kan vara nyttiga i dagens moderna samhälle. En kommentar från undersökningen sammanfattar bra vad många nog är helt eniga om:

"They are far too cleaver to sit and vegetate"!

How should we define the breed today?

The Smooth Collie is today classified as a working dog breed in Sweden, a definition and group membership based on the breed's historical background and the traditional uses of the working dog such as tracking, search dogs, messenger dogs etc.  In recent years, the breed's popularity has increased, both in Scandinavia, in the UK and many other countries.  A lot of dogs have won big in shows, other competed and done very well in obedience and within the fields of above mentioned working dog competitions. A number of dogs in the Nordic countries and in the rest of Europe have been trained in other areas which apparently suit the Smooth Collie well in today's modern society such as: therapy dogs, assistance dogs, epilepsy dogs, Alzheimer dogs, service dogs, diabetes dogs, rescue dogs of various kinds, etc.

The purpose of this small study was to find out how the owners of Smooth Collies primarily defined their breed in 2011, and to see if the definition of the Smooth Collie was different in Sweden/Scandinavia compared with United Kingdom and the rest of Europe/other countries. I also wanted to find out if the owners felt that the concept of the term working dog was an accurate description of the breed in 2011 or if another term was more appropriate.

The survey was presented on two forums on Facebook, one Swedish - with members mainly from the Nordic countries, and one on the Smooth Collie Club of Great Britain’s forum page, where members from all over the world are represented, albeit mainly from the United Kingdom. This lasted for ten days, 30/9-9/10 2011. On both forums owners of Smooth Collies were called upon to respond to what they thought the Smooth Collie was m o s t likely to be defined as today and to choose a category of the proposed descriptions. Deliberately specified three categories, but with the ability to add categories if we so wished.

In total, 102 people responded to the categories on the forums. To this, however, has numerous dog owners instead decided to comment on their views about the breed, but thus not been included in the category results. Some have also put their voice in both the Swedish and the international forum. Some have also chosen to select all categories. Seven have chosen to send personal messages to me on Facebook from the Swedish Forum, and 11 have chosen to do so from the UK Forum.

On the Swedish/Scandinavian Forum "We who like the dog breed Smooth Collie" dog owners were urged to answer the following question:

 I want to know how owners of Smooths in different countries define the breed today -2011. How do you look upon the Smooth Collie -is it considered a ...? 

Three of the following category choice could be made. The intention was that the dog's owner would choose one category that the thought was most appropriate, but some chose several categories, including “allround-dog”. The latter category was also added on by a team member.

On the Swedish/Scandinavian Forum people appeared to agree to quite a high degree that the Smooth Collie was a breed of dog that could fit into most activities, ranging from the traditional fields of working dogs to many of the tasks available for dogs in modern society. Comments in posts or messages that it is its flexibility and its active kind , that "it does pretty much what we want"- have I interpreted as that dog owners understand their dogs to be active, cooperative and malleable to many different types of activities.

“Allround – dog” - is by far the winning category- although one might have to bear in mind certain randomness in the choice of this response category, then the meaning of the term allround- dog gives the breed such a picture in the caption that it may be, in belief, that a dog might be able to do everything possible for a canine to perform. I have interpreted this to mean that dog owners think that Smooths can be used for many different missions and activities. It is obviously a multifaceted breed!

Working dog - thirteen people chose this category and believed that the breed was considered a working dog. The number of Smooth Collie contestants at working competitions have also increased in parallel with that the breed has become numerically greater. Many owners and trainers appreciate the breed's working characteristics and according to the comments, many Smooths should be given the opportunity to show more often what they can achieve in these fields.

The Category working dog, however, apparently has no longer a stringent and does not give a fair descriptive picture of the Smooth at present. I have interpreted this to mean that dog owners are  primarily thinking of the traditional working fields such as tracking, reporting/messangerwork and searching, etc. and not directly on a working dog in general, regardless of the many different missions a dog can have in today's society. Even though most of them quite agree that it is an active breed that can be useful to many different assignments in modern society.

No one believed that the Smooth Collie was exclusively a show dog or a pure pet dog. However, several has pointed out that it is a beautiful show dog and an excellent companion!

On the English-speaking Forum SCCGB no one chose to define the Smooth Collie as merely a show dog, thirteen people answering working dog, but interestingly enough, these were mainly Nordic dog owners, but also some from Europe. Unlike Scandinavian dog owner, 25 people thought answered that the breed today was primarily a pet dog. Some also commented that it could be used for other purposes and that it was a bonus if it was given this opportunity.

One member of the Forum added the category multi purpose dog that, like allround-dog has a very broad, perhaps still broader range. The need to create an additional category was obvious and later also most people chose to vote for this very category (25).

As on the Scandinavian forum, many felt the need to explicitly describe all the different areas of the how the Smooth may be useful today and why it is so.  Still, also on this forum the term "working dog" was avoided - which I interpret to mean that even in the breed's country of origin and in other English speaking countries, this term does not fully describe the breed clearly today or that it has an out of date meaning. Someone responded e.g. that very few breeders breed for sheepdog work today.

It may also be that the perception of what the term working dog is in the Scandinavian countries, i.e. it generally describes the traditional working fields as tracking, searching, reporting etc. whilst it in no way have the same meaning  for many dog enthusiasts outside the Nordic countries.

Certain unpredictability is also possible within this discussion, when comments sometimes are of more general towing and describes a cleaver, beautiful and healthy breed of dog than with a focus on specific applications.

The results also of this forum suggest that the Smooth today is considered to be a dog that can fit for many different missions in the society, but that the term working dog does not provide an entirely accurate description of the dog breed!

It is also put forward, from several dog owners and breeders in many different countries, the many activities and for the many purposes that Smooths can be useful to e.g. rescue dogs, therapy dogs of various kinds, PAT dogs, assistance and search dogs. Guide dogs for the blind, hearing aid dogs for the deaf, signal dogs, epilepsy awareness , Alzheimer-  and diabetic dogs and sheepdogs etc. added to this are many comments about the breed's many successes in obedience and agility.

Many people on this forum have also chosen to describe the breed through the comments rather than selecting one of the categories. They have put forward the Smooth to be e.g. -active, responsive and that its characteristics make it suitable for many social missions, that it is independent, but at the same time it can easily perceive commands and cooperate.

In summary, everything suggests that most owners of Smooth Collies believes that it is a breed that can fit into performing many different types of tasks, assignments, activities and works in the modern society. It is a multifaceted or "multi-useful dog". Most point out that the breed's flexibility is associated with the fact that the breed is active, its characteristics, that it is formable, versatile and has the capacity to perform various tasks when it is given such opportunities. If it is given the opportunity to perform any kind of activity, it is very likely it will appreciate this. Several breeders have also commented that it is a beautiful, healthy breed with mental capacity and that these are goals they strive to achieve and maintain.

Although the breed has become a very successful show dog - no one has described the breed predominantly defined like this. If the reason for this is that those who keep their dogs merely as show dogs selected not to participate in the survey or if there is a pejorative feature of the very concepts of show dogs is difficult to determine, within the framework of this minor study.

As I have interpreted this, dog owners agree that there's not an appropriate term to describe the Smooth Collie per definition. For the most part, the term working dog does not describe the breed very precisely today, neither in Sweden, the Nordic countries, nor in the breed's country of origin or in other countries where Smooths are bred and owned by everyday dog owners. The concept of working dog is not clearly defined and the meaning is not the same for people in Scandinavia and for many outside the Nordic countries.

It is clear that the Smooth Collie is described as a multifaceted and most useful breed, a dog that can do many different tasks. On the basis of these expressed opinions, it would benefit the breed if it could create a clarification of the term working dog and perhaps create a distinct term that describes all essential purposes of the breed that many people have now expressed.  A term that defines the Smooth Collie on an international level -regardless what country we live in.

The Smooth Collie: A multifaceted dog that can be useful in many various fields of dog activities in today's modern society. One of the posted comments summarizes well what many said:
